Mr. James H. Hance, Jr. serves as an Operating Executive of The Carlyle Group. Mr. Hance focuses on the Global Market Strategies segment and the financial services sector. Prior to his affiliation with The Carlyle Group, he served as the Vice Chairman and the Chief Financial Officer at Bank of America Corporation and at Bank of America N.A. from August 1988 to April 2004. He was responsible for principal investing, investor relations, the legal department, corporate strategy, and management services which provides for real estate needs. Mr. Hance was also responsible for its Finance Group, comprising the finance, accounting, and control functions, and for Treasury including balance sheet management. He was instrumental in the string of acquisitions that transformed NCNB into NationsBank and subsequently Bank of America. He served as a Director of Bank of America Corp. from 1999 to 2005.
Prior to joining NCNB in March 1987, he spent 17 years as a Partner at Price Waterhouse in Philadelphia and Charlotte. For six years, Mr. Hance was a Partner in the Charlotte office and also served as the Audit Partner responsible for the firm’s relationship with NCNB Corp. From August 1985 until December 1986, he served as the Chairman and the Co-Owner of Consolidated Coin Caterers Corp. in Charlotte.
Mr. Hance has served as the Chairman and Director of Sprint Nextel Corp. since February 8, 2005. He also currently serves as a Director of American City Business Journals Inc., Cousins Properties, Inc., Duke Energy Corp., and Ford Motor Co. Mr. Hance previously served as a Director of Morgan Stanley from 2009 to 2012, a Director of Caraustar Industries Inc. from 1995 to 2003, and a Director and Member of the Compensation Committee of Lance Inc. from 1995 to 2003. He also previously served as a Director of Fon Group, Enpro Industries Inc., and Rayonier Inc.
Mr. Hance serves as the Chairman of Trustees at North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Mr. Hance is a Trustee of Washington University in St. Louis and a Member of Washington University’s National Council for the John M. Olin School of Business. In addition, he is a Director of The United Negro College Fund and The Foundation for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as well as a Member of the Society of International Business Fellows. Mr. Hance served on the Boards of Visitors at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business and Johnson C. Smith University. He has also served as the Co-Chairman of Advantage Carolina.
